The Tricky Business of Being True
“I wanted only to try to live in accord with the promptings which came from my true self. Why was that so very difficult?” Hermann Hesse
Being true to ourselves is tricky business.
I have spent countless hours reflecting on, researching and writing about what makes it so very difficult to honour who we authentically are.
Often, fear gets in the way of people doing the inner work of self-fidelity.
These fears include:
- Being worried about taking the lid of the ‘can of worms’ that they have worked decades to push down deep inside of them
- Being afraid that they have spent so long pretending and fitting-in that they don’t know who they are anymore
- Being terrified that doing the inner-work might confirm their greatest fear – that there is something really wrong with them
If we can dig deep enough to find the courage to look within and to begin the work of figuring out who we really are, and how we best serve the troubled world we inhabit, we quickly discover that fears are not grounded in reality.
We discover that those nasty, judgmental voices in our heads come from disempowered, fearful ‘parts’ of us – and that they don’t reflect who we really are.
We discover our indestructible core of strength and goodness.
We discover that we have the capacity to heal past hurts and rise above patterns of behavior that no longer serve us.
We discover that everything we’ve been searching for has been waiting patiently inside of us.
Last week I delivered by Being True Masterclass.
I spoke about moving through these fears and how to navigate the four of main problems we may then encounter:
- We underestimate the cost of disconnecting from our authentic selves
- We don’t really understand the cause of our own suffering
- We’re looking for a cure in all the wrong places
- We don’t have the capability to skillfully practice (yet)
